The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu
In Japan, autumn is considered an ideal season for engaging in the arts, as the weather becomes milder and the air turns crisp and clear. It's a time when people find it easier to focus on creative pursuits such as painting, music, performing arts, and literature. This is why the phrase “Autumn of Art” (Geijutsu no Aki) came into use-to capture the season's deep connection with artistic expression.
The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu is pleased to announce that, as a part of its own "autumn of the arts," it will be holding a hands-on event featuring the traditional Japanese craft of kintsugi, or gold-joined pottery repair.
To honor Japan's “Autumn of Art,” The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu presents a unique opportunity to experience kintsugi-the traditional art of golden repair.
The hotel building was formerly an elementary school and has been carefully preserved, now reborn as a hotel that offers a luxurious experience to guests from both Japan and abroad. The hotel space, which blends modern comfort with cherished memories of its past as a place of learning, resonates deeply with the spirit of "kintsugi," which creates new value while retaining the best elements of the old.
Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese technique for repairing broken or chipped ceramics and porcelain using lacquer and gold powder. The item isn't mirely repaired: the joints themselves become a beautiful form of decoration, adding new value and appeal to something that would otherwise be unusable.
This event was planned with the goal of participants discovering new beauty in old things and experiencing the moment when broken things are given new life, based on the commonalities between the two. This limited-time event will feature a kintsugi instructor from Kyoto, who will teach participants how to make kintsugi accessories using broken or chipped pottery. This special space is the perfect location to enjoy the moment when something old is transformed into a beautiful new object.
